Suse 10.0 OSS Freezes During Boot

I have Suse Linux 10.0 OSS and during boot it freezes when it seems about 75-85% through the boot process, normally around the place where powersaved or the ssh daemon is started. I can only boot successfully by using the failsafe mode.

Before rebooting I installed QT 4.0, updated some KDE packages and installed the kernel-sources. I am going to try and remove the sources and see if this solves the problem. In the meantime, can anyone shed any light on the subject?

Try booting the box using the "noapic" and/or "acpi=off" and/or "pci=noacpi" switches

I'll give that a go. I am able to boot in failsafe mode, so perhaps it is something in the runlevel that is causing the problem. I have been able to boot up fine for over 2 weeks (since I replaced a damaged hard drive). This is the first time it has happened. ACPI has been working without any problems, so I would be surprised if it were this.

I'll let you know what my results yield.
Rioch.

OK, I have managed to narrow the problem down with a little trial and error.

Starting up using the normal bootloader selection but pressing F2 and entering "3" so that the system boots to runlevel 3 work without any problem. During boot, it reports that the following two services have not been loaded:

- nfs
- smbfs

So, for some reason these *could* be the cause. I will investigate further.
