Strange problem with du and df

Hey guys,

I have an interesting problem.

I have my /var partition mounted with 20 GB and when I do df -h it says that I only have 3 GB left. But when I go to /var and type in du -h it states that the whole var directory is only 3.8 GB.

I searched the whole directory manually and there is nothing that is growing. My problem is that the webserver quit working yesterday because the partition was full. I deleted a backup of the Mysql database which was in /var but it is filling up again!

Any idea why there is the difference between df and du and how do I find the files which are supposed to by that big?

THX,

Suinatsa

Take a look at /var/log, /var/mail, and /var/spool. Those are the most likely to grow over time (in my experience) and need regular house keeping to clear out old logs.
