Strange mkdir error/behavior : Mandrake

Ok, here's a strange problem I never encountered before.

Using mkdir to create a directory whose name is the same as another file in the parent directory, I get an error: file already exists. I get the same error when I try to rename a directory and a file with the same name exists in the parent directory.

Basically, I am unable to create both a file and a directory with the same name

Am I missing something obvious here

You can't have a file and a directory with the same name. Essentially both are just a collection of inodes, but they are treated slightly differently.
