Startx error: cannot open /dev/tty0

Hi,
I just installed openSuse. After some trouble with dependencies, I managed to start server x, but I get this error:

fatal error:
xf860OpenConsole: cannot open /dev/tty0 (no such file or directory)

If I try 'ls -lo /dev/tty0' I get:

crw--w---- 1 root 4, 0 2011-08-31 21:04 /dev/tty0

I can't understand where is the problem.

Someone can help me?
Thanks

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

I tried from root 'chown user /dev/tty0', but when I reboot /dev/tty0 owns again to root.

The error now is:
xf860OpenConsole: cannot open virtual console 7 (permission denied)

Hi,

The entries in /dev are created when needed (most of them), changing ownership or permissions by hand will not work (or it will untill you reboot).

I see in post #1 that you had dependency problems. Are those really fixed? You don't mention this, but did you change the way Suse starts? It should start in a GUI by default.

Another thing I notice: It seems you are trying to start X as root user (bad idea!). Does it work when you start X as normal user?

Did you check the log files (start in /var/log/) and are there entries that stand out?

Hope this helps.

No, I haven't changed anything. I only installed openSuse loading the iso image from hard disk instead of loading the dvd/cdrom.

I started as a normal user.

I'm going to check the X log file as soon as possible.
