starting postfix gives error

[root@maillists adam]# postfix start
postfix: error while loading shared libraries: libdb-3.1.so: cannot open shared object file: No such file or directory

However locate libdb gives:

/var/spool/postfix/lib/libdb-3.3.so
/usr/share/doc/libdb3.3-3.3.11
/usr/share/doc/libdb3.3-3.3.11/LICENSE
/usr/share/doc/libdb3.3-3.3.11/README
/usr/lib/libdb.so.3
/usr/lib/libdb2.so.3
/usr/lib/libdb.so.2
/usr/lib/libdb1.so.2
/usr/X11R6/lib/modules/extensions/libdbe.a
/lib/libdb-3.3.so

Is this just a case of providing a soft link?

thanks in advance

Your version of postfix requires the libdb-3.1.so from the package db3-3.1.x, and you have libdb-3.3.so from the package db3-3.3.11, so the problem is the version of the lib ...
You can try to make a link, but possibly could give you some unexpect behavior ...

You could try the symbolic link, though the earlier warning is probably worth paying attention to. You wouldn't think that a newer version -- a minor version at that -- would break compatibility with a prior minor version but stranger things have happened. I wonder if it's possible for the two versions of the shared library to coexist.

Also, if you just installed that library, I believe you'll need to run ldconfig to get things working. Try: ``ldconfig -v'' after taking a look at the ldconfig man page.

Also, is a newer version of postfix available that's been linked against the newer library?
