Start Here Group Now Empty

The Start Here group that appears on the desktop in Gnome used to have a number of icons for setting up various aspects of the system. Today, it is entirely empty. What could cause that and how do I get it repopulated?

Thanks

I was able to get some more info on this but still not working right. From another post where I could not edit menus, the response was to copy

/etc/gnome-vfs-2.0/modules/default-modules.conf.with-menu-editing
to default-modules.conf

So, I copied back the original file and that made items appear in the Start Here group on the desktop again. Unfortunately, then I had no items on my "Main Menu" from the panel except for those up to "Run Program". None of the other applications appeared.

So, I have some idea of how this started, but when I put things back, it still is not working properly.

Advice appreciated!

Thanks
