ssh session stops working

I am running a desktop with kubuntu, connecting via with ssh through a shell to a server running debian down the hall. I setup and installed both machines. When I am working on the server sometimes my shell will just stop responding. It usually happens when I leave it alone for a few minutes. At this point I cannot reconnect to the server or even ping it until I reboot it. I am able to login locally though. Any ideas?

sounds like the network interface on one of the machines is failing, nothign to do with ssh at all if it stops responding to icmp too. is there a third machine to see what is stilll recahable from elsewhere? andything in the dmesg output on either machine? what if you just restart the eth0 on either machine?

I had the same problem a little while ago and pinged again, no response... So, I get up to go to the bathroom and come back. Wait... I'm getting a response now, it's just taking forever! I'm guessing that what is really happening is that the 64mb or ram on this p1 is not enough to support the software and services I have running on it and the computer is just slowing down so much that I don't realize it is actually working.... I think it's time for an upgrade.
