Sound System problems

I have no idea how to manage hardware or for that matter install hardware.

My soundcard is on the mobo, everything else was installed and recognized just fine from the useless modem to video card and this is a pretty new computer.

However GNOME gave me no errors but it won't play any sound and any attemp to play any sound seems to cause errors like "error writing resource". KDE however gives an error stating the sound system does not exist in the expected directory.

What should I do?
I have no clue of what steps to take next.

Using Ubuntu with KDE (Kubuntu) for GUI.
My sound card is Realtek High Definition Audo (Realtek HD Audio). I found the drivers for it, a Linux version of them. I need to know how to install the package....
