sound only works as root

I can only get the sound to work for root I added a new user and when I logged in to that acount it says I do not have permision for
/dev/dsp so I changed the permision then the sound stopped working in the other user acounts

what were the permissions?

I am not positive, but I think they might have to be : 755 or maybe 775.

You might consider creating a group sound if one doesn't exist. Then own the sound devices to this group:
chown root.sound /dev/dsp /dev/mixer /dev/sequencer /dev/midi

And then chmod them to be rwx by user and group and nothing by anyone else:
chmod 770 /dev/dsp /dev/mixer /dev/sequencer /dev/midi

And then finally add your users to this group each time you add a new user that will need the sound system usable.

usermod -g sound username

HTH

Cool
