hey guys... i got redhat 8 installed and running... but have no idea how to install my soundblaster live value card.. i downloaded both drivers from soundblaster but cant figure out how to install them... help!! -james
You do not necessarily need to do anything like that!
Firstly, and this may sound dumb, but check your cables! Make sure that the output from your card is working nicely. Then, open up a terminal (the thing that looks like a dos box) and find a .wav file (hint: /usr/share/sounds usually houses a few) and use the play command. If you hear nothing, then as root type modprobe emu10k1, exit from being root and try again.
Oh, a word of warning though... you won't be able to play MP3 files immediately - due to a possible licencing problem when RH8 was being released, it shipped without the proper codecs for MP3 files.
urgg... still no luck... i have an amped sound system that requires a digital output only.. soundblasters doesnt do this by default... is there any way i can configure the driver i installed in linux?? in windows it was adjusted from the settings folder... thanks -james
umm... not sure about that... but did you make sure to turn off PnP Bios in your CMOS? I had to do this before my Live would work. Also, how new are you? did you run sndconfig from the terminal? this can help set it up.
im 3 days old with linux..... im try disabling the pnp bios.. also how do you run sndconfig? i downloaded and installed it but coulnt find it... thanks -james
you should be able to run it by simply typing sndconfig in the terminal, if it's installed right, other than that, I don't know, I've only been with it for 4 months.
I've got the emu10k1 but it's a bz2 (what ever that is) and although the SBlive 5.1 digital that I have bought to replace the poxy AC97 onboard thing is recognised by the system (it also seems to be loading the "module") I still haven't got any noises i.e. no kde startup jingle etc, let alone any music.
I have tried the idea in the release notes, but can't sus how to unzip it!
I've got SBLive and the driver comes embeded in the kernel already. You don't need to do anything, except on a fresh install of your system, just choose that driver, or if you just purchased the card, you have to recompile your kernel, and just select the SBLive driver in the kernel, and it'll work. That's what I did, and I got my 6 speaker and huge subwoofer surround sound all hooked up and my neighboards scream at me every night, , hope I don't get evicted, heheh.
not in his case, Red Hat will detect and install new hardware during the startup, should be no problem, again, as long as he has PnP-BIOS turned off in the CMOS
urgg.. i still havent gotten my card working.. with windows i was able to access sblives 'audio hq' where the 'digital output only' option resides.. now how can i make this adjustment on linux? is it even possible? tia -james

Hi John
Yeah, Z's got it. You are still running Mandy right? Post here, the contents of your /etc/modules.conf folder. Also, you will need to probe the module, and like Z said, you shouldn't need to do anything with that bz2 file. Unless you are running the digital out to some digital speakers (which is what I am trying to suss out for this guy). So for now, simply try:
modprobe emu10k1
Then try playing a tune or 2, for now just go with an easy wav file or something like that.
If that link works, I think that at the bottom it talks about your problem, but you might have to have the emu-tools installed from the site. Anyway, it says to run: 'emu-config -d' to enable digital out.
Earlier up in that thread though it says that if its the Value card, that you might not have such luck... So I guess YMMV. You might also wanna search around for more threads about it, and read that forum a bit more. Also, head over to their designated channel on IRC: irc.freenode.net #creative
And see if anyone has any other suggestions for ya.

This is what the modules.conf looks like at the moment. Also, for information, I have disabled the onboard sound in the BIOS so I can check the soundblaster in window$ as well - stupid, I know but as I have no way of telling whether it's working under either OS, I am presuming that it is going under windows as I have followed the instructions that came with the card and plugged the cdrom/cdrw device into the card and have had music cd's playing.
But I digress because I don't really give a toss about the window$ (but I have written to Santa Claus to ask him for a set of creative 5.1 speakers so I can have a go at deafening myself when I do something with the computer - I wonder if he will reply and ask which model of speaker set I won't - because I have been very good and delivered all the milk and I haven't driven on any prohibited roads under the london boroughs transport scheme and I even took a case of beer down to the local fire station for the striking firemen).
Anyway, do I need to modify my modules.conf ???

John
p.s. when I did the modprobe emu10k1, I was just returned to a root prompt - should I have got anything back ???
Since I posted the last one, I haven't got a clue what I did as I haven't changed anything but it now seems that I am getting system sounds.
Could it have been that I have "rebooted" between the mandrake and winXP? I was under the impression that I don't have to do that to make any system changes take effect!
I have also just tried the powermanga game that I got off the mandrake disc's and I'm getting all of the game noises music etc etc.
I don't know, I must be doing something really stupid!!
