If I remember correctly(I installed snort a month ago), you have to register on snort site to be able to download the latest snort rules(i think).
Register on http://www.snort.org and download from http://dl.snort.org/sub-rules/snortr...RRENT_s.tar.gz

but the registration is only valid till 30 days. whereas in past there were 3 sections for rules.
1. Community (free)
2. registered
3. Paid.

i think after 30 days account will be locked out.
