smtp problems, can't send mail to other accounts

My smtp server is active and accepting connections but won't send mail except to my own account. For example if I (me@me.com) send mail to me@me.com it works and I can then download the messages from POP and view it. If I send to friend@friend.com I get the error msg of "Recipient address rejected: Relay access denied" in thunderbird (my email client). I can receive anyone's mail (so the POP server is working great) I just can't compose/respond to anything.

You need to tell your mailserver to allow relaying for you. How you would go about this depends on a) what mail server you're running, and b) how your network is set up (i.e is this a network? is the mail server running on your own machine, or are there two?). If you only have one machine, you need to make sure you allow relaying for localhost. If you have two or more machines on the network, tell your server to allow relaying for those IPs.

Wait... what? Did you ask this question on behalf of someone else? If not, then it's your mailserver that needs changing, not your friend's.
