Angry slow...


linux is very slow on my comp for some unkown reason. My friends computer which has around my same computer speed runs considerably faster than mine. Is there any way to tweak linux so it will run faster>
-it takes aruond 40 seconds to open file manager.

is your systrem the same as his? are you running the same software? for instance running kde on a p200 is a non starter. it may be worth looking at the output from "dmesg" to see if there are any timeouts or such like

ew both installed the same linux (mandrake linux), i have 800 mhz celeron he has 677 mhz celeron but he has 96 megs and i have 64.

Hi,

That would be your trouble, not enough ram. At least double it to 128meg. KDE and Gnome with Nautulis (yuck!) are pretty heavy on the ram.

Or try a lighter wm like, blackbox or XFce.

There could be a lot more too it than that. Do you have your vid card settings right? If you have twice the resolution cranked then X is going to have to hog quite a lot of resources. How many processes do you have running under "top"?
