Self made Linux

Assuming I wanted to put my own Linux together, instead of Red Hat: what would I need to download to have an OS?
The kernel? KDE?
Where does Linux start?
Big question, but it interests me.

I think a very good distro if you want control over everything that is on your system is Gentoo.

All that comes with the basic LiveCD is the tools needed to install everything. You will need to compile your own kernel, cron, everything. However, the tools that it gives you, Portage, is one of the best around.

If you want to install KDE all you have to do it type
emerge kde

it will download the source the sourc and compile it for you.

Also it has what is called USE flags which means that if I have PDA in my USE flags it will install support for PDA's in any package I install. However, if it was now in my USE flags support would not be install.

WARNING: Everything is compiled from source which means it has the potentional to make your system much faster, by seting up the compile flags (like prelinking), however it takes a long time to install. OpenOffice took almost 2 days on my celeron 400.

Also, too update you system type
emerge -pU world
and it will show you all the packages in your system that need updating.

I used Mandrake 8.0 for about 30 minutes, and it was then Slackware for me. After wrestling with it for about a year I have a good understanding of it now. And I love it.

Just for the record, what was it you did'nt like about the Drake-ster.......was it the rpm dependancy crap, or point and click emulation of windows, or something else.......thx

I thought it was too much like windows. It did too much for me. I wanted linux because I knew it was going to be configurable. I also may have had a bad disc, but at the time I was looking for something that I liked. Mandrake froze on my multiple times and was too much like windows, so off to Slacker land I went, and have been happy ever since.
