Secure file sharing


I am looking for a web based solution to share documents securely among different locations in an organization.

Currently we send documents that may contain confidential information via email.

What I would like to do is have a user friendly "portal" where one user could securely upload a file to a folder on the server and the intended recipients could securely download the file from the server.

This would need to be a user friendly interface with a simple logon screen, browse, and upload/download buttons.

Is there an open source solution for this?

Any info is appreciated.

"Securely" is a loaded term, but I would think that any well configured FTP server would do the job.

I understand about the "securely" part. Maybe web based was the incorrect terminology. Maybe I should have said browser based. This has to be very easy to use on the client side. Example, log on to secure website, upload/download file to/from folder you have access to.
