Secure?




Hi

I just wanted to know, are distros like drake and red hat completly secure from people knowing what is on your pc. I mean Windows XP tells MS what software is on your pc, is linux completly secure from things like this? I just have this parinoia about whats going in and out of my pc

you mean as in spyware? there is no one to report back to, so no, there is no one knowing... you can register things with redhat but it's not even nearly the same thing. M$ do all that crap as they are proprietry developers, while linux is the exact opposite... so no one minds what you have....

Fact is that if you for instance register @ redhat.com your system to use up2date they ask you if you want to include system configuration and/or package list or not ... so you can choose how much information is sent out.

Even if there was some kind of spyware on your computer it would be simple to discover it by listing the processes.

If you think there would be some program containing something you don't like you might aswell, uninstall the program (using RPM), download the source code of the program, check the source so that it doesn't contain any harmful code and the compile it by yourself (and install it).
Of course you need to know some programming for this ;-)
