screen resolution in boot cd

the screen resolution in Ubuntu Server (before i start the install is set to "640X480" this is the only resolution available, i have read some of the other posts on this for Ubuntu, most suggested to edit the x11.conf file so that the maximum section is set to what they want it as, unfortunatly there is no maximun section in my x11.conf file, nor is there a HorizSync or VertRefersh sections. please also email me if you have a solution
thank you
frusterated noob

actually, i managed to install, was difficult, and i would justlike a much higher resolution, any higher would work though, i still cannot change the res though, i have read many forums tying to find a solution, i have an old IBM NetVista with a Pentium 4 (no idea what graphics card though) i cannot edit the xorg.conf file because i do not have write permissions for it, and i am not very good with the command line editors. if you could help out in any way that would be great i have a feeling ill need to know stuff like this in my profession later -computer network security so even if you could walk me through how to edit the file in command line with root permissions that would be great!!

thanks for any help you can give
