Hi Mahoney,
When the screen goes black/blank, try exiting X by hitting <CTRL> + <ALT> + <Backspace> to dump out to a command prompt. From there, you can run Redhat's X configuration utility Xconfigurator (case-sensitive, of course) to enter the right info for your video card and monitor. If you still get errors when you run startx, try this:
Quit X again, and at the command line type:
Code:
startx &>/tmp/Xerrors <--this syntax assumes you're using bash. For csh, transpose the & and >
This will start X, but will also create a file in /tmp called Xerrors, and write the standard output and standard error of the startx command to that file. Quit X again and type:
to view the file. You can use the up/down arrows and pg up/ pg down keys to navigate. Look for any errors messages which might point to your problem and repost if you need more help. If you get the classic "No screens found" type of error, your vid card/monitor definitely are not being recognized correctly.
Also- as already suggested, let us know what model of video card (and monitor) you have.
BTW- for some strange reason, during a couple of Redhat 6.2 and LinuxPPC (for Mac) installs, I've been able to get X configured by specifying my vid card/monitor/desired resolutions in Xconfigurator, but then choosing to skip the testing step that follows. I have no idea
why this worked, but it did.
