Running Linux on the desktop, my story...

This week I started a job within my major department at school (www.vcu.edu). I'm one of two network techs. We basically keep up the ISY labs, faculty network, and the server room (3 1Us running RH, 2 2Us running Win 2000 Server, 4 4U (maybe 5 even) running RH, and 2 Sun 220Rs running Solaris 9). We have an office on the floor and basically provide tech support in those areas. Today I got my desk/workstation setup and was about to install WinXP. I thought this would be a great time to give Linux an honest attempt as a desktop (I've been running Linux as a server for awhile). So I installed WinXP on a 20GB partition and RH9 on a 30GB partition. Mozilla looks great, Evolution is really nice, and I can across 'rdesktop' from the other NetTech. OMG! That is awesome. It's basically a Terminal Services client for those that didn't know. So with rdesktop and ssh, I'm going to be having a great time. I've had a great experience so far.

Oh, I do want to ask about setting the runlevel (I think that's the term). I need to boot to 3 instead of 5, but where do I change it? I need to install the nVidia drivers and you can't be running X. Also, I installed the Java SDK, but the plugin for Mozilla isn't working. Does anyone have any tips for me here?

edit the file /etc/inittab and change:

# Default runlevel. (Do not set to 0 or 6)
id:5:initdefault:

to

# Default runlevel. (Do not set to 0 or 6)
id:3:initdefault:

Well, theres lots of different things for the java problem. Basically, all you have to do is symlink the Java plugin from the Java directory to the plugin directory of your mozilla folder.

I knew what I needed to do, I just couldn't remember where the file was located. Perfect, thanks!

I did some looking on Google and found something that basically says this. When I get to work on Monday I'll check it out deeper.
