Root wont login


This is on Kanotix BH9.worked fine for weeks(had to doa re-install befre that,long story-my mitake ) .When I try ot login as root(on the commandline)it acts lstop for a while and says wrong password when I enter the username!When I try to su then it says "setgid operation not permited".

You typed in the wrong password probably.

Heh, it wont take a password.As soon I eneter the username(root) it acts like I netered a password.

Hmm can you boot up your computer into single-user mode? That gets you into a root command-line prompt automatically without having to enter a password. If you can, just try modifying the password.

Maybe you or something disabled direct root login, and the ability of any user to use the command 'su'. It's possible... I don't know where to check that, but I do know that you can block that kind of stuff.

Did some googling on "setgid operation not permited" seems like it has to do something with setuid or permissions to users.

In the boot loader kernel options add init = /bin/bash and rw, remove initrd.

That should get you into a root shell without login.

Then type the passwd command and set a new passwd for root.


Or you can use a root/boot floppy or cdrom and chroot into the filesystem
