Rewrite kernel in install cd


I need to install the conectiva linux version 9, but the kernel that comes with the instalation cd doesn't support my hardware, so I think of make a new kernel and install it in the disk to boot. The problem is that I don't known the right place to put the kernel...

Does someone knows that???
