when i start up my computer and have logged in as user. i get the command line. then i type startx to start and enter desktop. then the screens turns black and nothing happens.
Well, most likely X isn't configured or configured incorrectly. What distro are you using as some have their own tools to configure X with? Most though you can always use xf86config to configure using XFree86's tool to configure.
you see, i have red hat 8.0. i got it installed at my friends house. there it worked perfectly. but when i conneted my comp. at home my problem happened!!!???
im not sure about what you mean with monitor, but when my screen turned black i pushed alt ctrl f1 to come back and then i saw this:
invalid entry (missing '=') at /usr/bin/rhn-applet-gui:10
----------------------------''---------------------------- 13
15
and on
and on
qobject:: connect: no such slot kurited :: block-in const char*,int
----------''----------- (senders name unnamed)
-----------''---------- (recievers name unnamed)
when i brought my machine home it should have been working right away, but that error showed up after i typed startx. but thanks i'll try to configure it. is there anything special i should remember to configure??? if not i'll keep you noticed. thanks
just check and see if the right video card and video memory is detected, and that your monitor vertical and horizontal rates are the proper numbers....if you are unsure of these numbers then i suggest you either dig out your monitors book, or go to the manufacturers sites if no book is available and find out that way what these numbers are for you can double check when running the X configurator..
