Red Hat, non X, screen width.

Anyone know how to change a command line only Red Hat installation, so that I get more characters per line on screen? You know, more columns per screen type of thing. I'm sure there's a technical term for this. It's like screen resolution on a GUI I suppose...

Cheers,

Rob

you want to change the acutal resolution? erm.. the only way i can imagine it being possinle to to set vga=ask on boot, which will give you a menu on a normal boot of linux, dunno if it'll work for an install tho

On the install I believe it has an area where it'll let you pass extra commands? Since I don't know if it will work on install to set vga='ask', set it to a number e.g. vga=788 is equivelant to an 800x600 screen size, vga=791 is equivelant to 1024x768. Those are the only two I can remember right off....

yeah, the ask menu will generally only list NON framebuffer sizes, some of which look pretty ugly.

you can also edit /etc/lilo.conf, and add the line vga=791, if your monitor can hndle 1024x768 this will work nice. After you are done editing lilo.conf dont forget to type /sbin/lilo

example:
image = /boot/vmlinux
root = /dev/hda1
label = Linux
read-only
vga=791
