Red Hat 9???

http://www.redhat.com/mktg/rh9iso/

It seems RH will be releasing version 9 on March 31st for RHN subscribers, a week later for others. Can there really be that much improvement since 8.0 was released last year?

I think they should have researved 9.0 for the (2.6, 3.0) kernel. I think they just wanted to keep up with other Distros in numbering. But any true linux person knows that really means nothing. I think it has to do with there desktop hopes.

Of course RH going to come out with version 9. Mandrake has a 9, slack just came out with their new 9. If you were a newbie, went online to buy a boxed set or even download would you get a 9 version or an 8?

I hate this mumbo jumbo about version numbers, they don't mean crap really except that its a newer version. Don't go by how high the version number is, as its irrelevant and I truly believe Redhat is not making their next release 9.0 since Slack, Mandrake, and whoever is already on 9.0.

Curious how there is nothing on the RedHat site about what is new in 9.0. Seems to be primarily an attempt to milk the $60 /yr subscription fee out of people.

redhat tends to give major version numbers only to distros which arent backwards compatible. I.e. distros with a new major gcc version.

In my oppinion this is just an April fools joke.....I mean they just released 8.0 not even 6 months ago......

RH mailing list posters we're much more concerned of the version numbering 'outdating' their RH certifications. I got this from the RH mailing list:

*********************
The nameing scheme did not have anything to do with trying to expire your
certifications early. This a quote from Pete Childers VP of
Global Learning Services (used with permission):

"RHCEs should not worry that the new number scheme will mean their
certifications age out earlier. It won't. Modified policies will be
forthcoming on the RHCE FAQs.

Questions/inquiries should be directed to rhcecert@redhat.com"

Hope this helps a little.

bsides that RHCE issue, i'm not really happy with this RHL 9.0 release - I'M JUST BEGINNING TO GET MY GRIP ON REDHAT 8.0!!!

and when it becomes available, chances are, potential clients would surely prefer 9.0.
