hm... ok... i changed the permissions to those /dev files already...
when i open xmms and try to play something, the error message is thus:

** WARNING **: oss_open(): Failed to open audio device (/dev/dsp): No such device

hm... i am wondering how is this so?

Is there an entry in "/dev" for "/dev/dsp"? If not then you have to create it by doing "./MAKEDEV audio" in "dev"

there are 2 entries for dsp in /dev

crw-rw-rw- 1 root sys 14, 3 Jul 19 1994 dsp
crw-rw-rw- 1 root sys 14, 19 Jul 19 1994 dsp1

it's not missing... but do u think i ought to do a "./MAKEDEV audio" anyway?

won't hurt...but have a look at the audio part of the MAKEDEV (found in /dev) script in a text editor to see what gets created when you do "MAKEDEV audio" and use that info to check your audio "dev's" first.

ok found the MAKEDEV script...
but i'm not sure how useful the info is... it just says this for the audio entry:

audio=" root audio 0660"

not sure if i'm interpreting this correctly:
so the audio /dev entries will be owned by root, in a group called audio? and with permissions 0660?

am i supposed to create an audio group and add my user to that group?

(i'm holding off the MAKEDEV for now...)

ok here's what i did:

1.) groupadd -g 16 audio
2.)in /dev, ./MAKEDEV audio
3.) add a user to /etc/group: audio:x:16:athos

same message i get from xmms:
can't open audio
please check that:
1.) you have the correct output plugin selected
2.) No other programs is blocking the soundcard
3.) your soundcard is configured properly

2.) is not a possibility.
i have checked 1.) and it seems correct...

so i think it's 3.)

but hm... so far no luck... help please, thanks...

I have an SB awe too, awe 64, that is. I remember that took me
a while to make it work with my Debian.. uh,.... anyway..

what I did, was:

pnpdump -c /etc/isapnp.conf
cd /lib/modules/`uname -r`/misc
(don't remember if it was misc or sound the subdir.. )

modprobe sound
modprobe sb irq=5

pnpdump -c will try to find an unused io etc....
if I didn't add the "irq=5" in the sb module, it assumed the irq 7..

that was the way in my Debian ...
good luck

modprobe sound
insmod uart401.0
modprobe sb irq=5

you can modprobe anywhere, but for insmod, it requires that
you especify the path to the module.
