GIMP actually may need to use lots of RAM, how else is it going to open very large images. I've had it eat up lots of RAM, but because it had to.

FF actually doesn't use that much RAM, with FF open right now, and many many tabs open as well as a new window, I am using a total of 372 MB (without cache) of 2GB, and from top, FF is using 291 MB of RAM. I could probably do with only 512 MB of RAM.

Openoffice is kinda bloated, and sometimes leaky, but it only uses large amounts of RAM when you open a large file.

I don't see what this rant is about. It only applies to Windows and (partially) KDE.

The basic inner workings (no GUI) are about the same, and they use little resources. But when you add a GUI, graphics take A LOT of memory and computing power, especially animated 3D effects.

I'm fiddling around with a CLI-only installation of Ubuntu and it's awesome. So much for Ubuntu being "bloated"-- this beauty could run on 1 byte RAM. Okay so maybe that's a bit of an exaggeration. How much to integers take up, 4 bytes...?
