Question Rampant confusion regarding the 3D drivers for XFree86

After much research and Googling, I am thoroughly confused as to where I can get up-to-date kernel drivers and userspace libraries for my Gateway 600S's Mobility Radeon 7500.

I am currently running 2.6.0-test8-mm1, Red Hat Linux 9.0, and XFree86 4.3.0-42 from the Fedora package-set. The radeon DRM in-kernel driver's version is 1.9.0 (with a date sometime in 2002; I can't get this string ATM), and the userspace component's version string, as reported by glxinfo -t, is Mesa DRI Radeon 1.2 4.0.4 20020611 (the exact RPM supplying the OpenGL libs is XFree86-Mesa-GL-4.3.0-42.i686.rpm, IIRC). I have been using the in-kernel agpgart and DRM drivers for a long time now and have gotten decent performance (Quake3 at 800x600 with moderate/high settings gets between 40 and 90 FPS).

I have been to the GATOS website, and AlanH's webspace on the XFree86 website, and the DRI sourceforge website, and the Mesa website, and a whole bunch of other places. Yet I am very confused as to what I want, which is basically this:

1. The most up-to-date in-kernel DRM drivers
2. The most up-to-date userspace components that are compatible with the XFree86 RPMs (if possible)

Can anyone here help me figure this out?

The drivers from the DRI site don't work with 2.5/2.6 kernels
they only work with 2.4.x kernels

GATOS is more for getting video capture to work.

I think what you need to do is work with the drivers that are
included in the kernel

If you want more up to date stuff I suggest compiling XFree from CVS
