/proc ?

What is this directory used for in redhat linux? I tried

root@avalanche [/]# du -sh /proc
du: `/proc/2787/fd/4': No such file or directory
0 /proc

I was looking to see what is taking up so much disk space, when I cd into proc directory i see a file called kcore taking up almost 1 gig of space. so what is it?

I'm pretty sure /proc is a virtual filesystem... It isn't really there, and doesn't take up any space.

Nemo's right, it is virtual, and basically
contains status information about your
Linux system... for instance
/proc/cpuinfo refelcts what your kernel
spots to be your machine at startup.

Cheers,
