Problems booting up in ubuntu

I switched to Ubuntu a couple weeks ago, and it's been working fine. Last night my laptop suddenly shut down for know apparent reason. I thought maybe it had come unplugged a while ago and I hadn't noticed, so I fiddled with the cord a little to make sure it was working (it hasn't been working very well lately), and booted up again. A couple hours later the same thing happened again, and since then it won't boot up.

Help is appreciated, thanks in advance.

can you please just clarify what hasn't been working very well lately...as it sounds (to me anyway) like we may have a hardware issue (eeek)

Well it isn't the cord in this case at least, because it will turn on. It stops just before the ubuntu logo screen where I would give it my username and password.
