problem with shell


about a month ago i upgraded kde to 3.1 and since i did that when i open up a terminal i get bash-2.05b# instead of root@home/ how to i get this to go back to root@home/?

Check that you have .bash_profile and or .bashrc in your home directory and that you have read and write access. As well as /etc/bashrc.

i am root on the system so i have all access but i do not have a /etc/bashrc.
bash-2.05b# locate bashrc
bash-2.05b#

and i went to /etc/ and it wasnt there....so what next heh.

"." bashrc

try "/etc/.bashrc" (note the period in front of .bashrc). Also, try /root/.bashrc

By the way, if you are dual booting Windows and Linux, it might be good to rethink the suggested lilo.conf line, root=/dev/hda1.

try this dude. It's the standard one for Gentoo...

export PS1='\[\033[01;32m\]\u@\h \[\033[01;34m\]\W \$ \[\033[00m\]'

put this in ~/.bashrc

like so:

echo "export PS1='\[\033[01;32m\]\u@\h \[\033[01;34m\]\W \$ \[\033[00m\]'" >> ~/.bashrc

you can do really cool things with PS, have a search on this site. I seem to remeber a thread asking for peoples PS statements.

thanks fatgod i did a touch ~/.bashrc and added that line and it works everytime now i appreciate it.
