Crossover works quite well for me under Ubuntu 6.10.

Have you tried Wine? What program are you trying to install that gives you the 3D error?

Try enableling the super user profile under system > Administration >> Usrs and Groups, check box netxt to show all system users then scroll up to the top of the list and double click the root account to modify the password. Then goo to system > administration >> loginwindow > security and check the box next to allow local system adminidtrator logins.
