what window manager are you running? gnome/kde/...?
if its one of those and not something like flux/ice/enlightenment/... you would:
try and make a shortcut just like in win32. for instance, say you want it on the panel (if you still havent pictured what i'm saying, click this:
http://cs.nyu.edu/~prm225/img/scrshot.png). if you notice i have icons on the "panel" which will run the program just as we have "quick links" on win32.
to have this, all you have to do is right-click on the panel, and there will be some option which says "add launcher" or "add prograsm" or something of the sort. you select that. then, for the "command" to execute, you tpe in what you would on the terminal, but give the complete path to the program. for eg:, i have amsn sitting in the dir /home/src/amsn. so my command will be

where /home/name is my home dir. and fill in the other options like "name" where you would say "amsn" or "msn" or whatever you like.
