There are a lot of choices when it comes to music: XMMS, kaffeine, amaroK, etc. I don't know that any one program is considered "preferred"; whatever works for you is what you should use
Beep Media Player is a GTK2 port of XMMS, I'd suggest it over XMMS simply because it looks better and does the same task.
That said, how big is your music collection? If you just want to play a few files and maybe listen to some streams then XMMS/BMP is perfect. If you have a large collection and want to manage it then something like MPD+client, amaroK or Rhythmbox would be better suited. I use MPD myself because I like the client-server setup it uses, I control my music from inside X with Gmpc, if I'm in the CLI then ncmpc is nice and they're all controlling the same server. Smooth.
I used to use xmms, then I found amarok and use it to manage my music,it does loads of stuff, finds album covers, fills in tags, shows lyrics, looks cool too.. and can be used as a xmms alikey. Very user friendly and updated frequently.
