This is taken from the end of /var/log/messages:

ifup-ppp: pppd started for ppp0 on /dev/ttyS2 at 38400
pppd 2.4.0 started by root, uid 0
using interface ppp0
local IP address 10.64.64.64
remote IP address 10.112.112.112
terminating on signal 15
Exit
modprobe: can't locate module ppp0

I'm running RedHat 7.0 with kernel 2.4.2. PPP stuff is all compiled into the kernel (ie not as modules). I've upgraded PPP and modutils (to meet the requirements in the ppp section of /usr/src/linux/Documentation/Changes). I don't understand what modprobe is... I thought it loaded kernel modules (but ppp0 is not the name of a kernel module right?). I've updated a few other packages (as instructed to in the documentation with the new kernel). Let me know if you need a complete list. Any help would be greatly appreciated

You need to check this out or try this. http://www.linuxdoc.org/HOWTO/Kernel-HOWTO-10.html
This should give you instructions on how to get those modules working again.

But I don't have PPP modules

This article explains how to load modules. However, I compiled my kernel with PPP support built in (NOT AS MODULES). ppp0 is not the name of a kernel model. In the 2.4.X kernel the relevant modules are ppp_generic.o, ppp_deflate.o, and ppp_async.o. ppp0 is (I think) the name of an interface. Maybe the interface is calling modprobe to try to load modules (which it can't find since they don't exist)? Is there a way to adjust/replace the interface ppp0?

Any thoughts/advice would be greatly appreciated

Rimmer (is confused!)

PS - I might try to recompile the kernel and put PPP support in modules... However, I would really like to understand what is happening here
