My computer shut down today due to a power outage, and when I got home I cant mount or boot should i just reinstall or what should I do. My windoze box is just fine but my router wasnt working right nor the modem so hmmm what is the deal. I cant get the kernel to boot nor get the second hard drive to be mounted. This is my first issue ever with linux. What is the issue do you guys think? I know I need an UPS now but is there any that is linux compatible.

Um, you need to provide more information. What happens when you try to boot, any error messages, etc, and ditto for what happens when you try to mount the hd. From where, by the way? If it doesn't boot, where do you mount the hd? Did you try mounting it from a live distribution such as Knoppix, DSL, or a resuce disk? What happens? If you can, try checking the file system. And what does this mean exactly?

I'm sorry you had such a bad experience, especially since you had a setup you were enjoying.

I think most UPS's will work with Linux. One that I'm certain will work (because I am using it this
very minute, and it has saved my setup several times already with power failures) is the APC Back-UPS ES 500.
It worked fine right off the bat, though getting its monitoring software to work took some doing (there
is a thread on LQ about it if you care to search).

It only cost me about $40 after a rebate. Five days after I installed it, the power failed in a big storm and
everything shut down normally after the switchover to battery power.

As for your present situation, I know if it was me, I'd just reinstall. What I would do first is reinstall using
"upgrade" mode in case things aren't so badly damaged that an install-from-scratch is necessary. If that
didn't work, then of course I'd break out in a cold sweat (literally--this is what happens to me) and do a
fresh install--hoping my home partition at least is still good. In other words, only format the root partition
and leave the other(s) alone.

If THAT didn't work, then I'd have to try to find out if the hard drive is physically damaged, etc.

But I'd do the safest thing first--the upgrade reinstall. I've done that many, many times and not had to
restore anything afterward. In effect, it just fixed whatever was wrong.
