The distro should be apparent at logon prompt screen unless someone has changed the welcome message.
Otherwise,try this:
uname -a

Hi, I'm not sure how to find out what distro the box is running, but you can find out the kernel its running with the 'uname' command. And if the kernel was precompiled, that should give you a hint to what distro it is. For example, some mandrake kernels contain a 'MDK' in its name.

Good Luck!

also slackware keeps its name and version number in /etc/slackware

Its just a normal text file so use
Code:
cat /etc/slackware
or
Code:
less /etc/slackware
to read it
