Partitioning with DiskDruid

I have found a long forgotten retail copy of RH 7.1 in my room and I would like to install it.

I am a total newbie in Linux

The drive I want to install it on is a 20 GB.
It has presently 2 partitions, a 5 GB PRI DOS with Win ME that I want to keep
and a 10 GB EXT DOS.
I read somewhere that I should keep the part where I want to install Linux unpartitioned till I'm ready to install.

I boot up the disk and have no problems until I get to disk partitioning, where I'm told that I do not have sufficient space to do automatic partitioning and will have to do it manually with disk druid.

My question: How should I partition the remaining 5GB?
They also ask for mount points, what are these?

OK,

/boot = 80 MB
SWAP= 250 MB
/ = rest of it

I should let you know that WinME will overwrite the MBR. Which means your dual boot will fail when WinME decides to overwrite the MBR at will. Make sure you create a boot floppy so you can recover later.

Hmm... okay... thanks.

And what are mount points? I cannot continue unless I specify them, but I don't know what they mean.

Hi Sykopath

Do you want to keep your extended partition or not?

If you dont then use Disk Druid to delete it - just click in side the graphical representation of it and click the delete button.

If you do want to keep it youll only have 5 gig for your Red Hat install - this is enough , dont worry

If your going to manually partition the 5 gig then youll need a
  • Root -
  • Swap - no more than twice your current RAM

Rememeber the partitions must be contiguos - ie no spaces between them - fill up the whole 5 gig first with the Root partition then re-size it using "Edit" - then put in a Swap partition at the very end.

Mount points in this context are simply places in the filesystem where these partitions are going to be accessed ie you're associating partitions with places in your filesystem.

re-post if there are any problems

Hmm okay thanks..... I'll try tonight. I want the ext partition. It'll be the "translator" between the two OSes(actually more of letting Windows see the files in the Linux partition).

I already have 512 in RAM, and my teacher at school has said another 500 megs for swap is anough. Do I have to double that to a gig?
