Nvidia and Intel i810 conflicts

Hello - I use the same machine and three different
hard drives to experiment with various Linux
distributions; I just change hard drives when I want
to try a new install of some distro which has gotten
my attention.

In doing this I've noticed that problems arise with
various distributions, often so serious that I am
unable to complete the installation, usually due to
a blank screen, or even to use vi in an attempt to
edit configuration files.

In my BIOS I have the only reference to the Intel
i810 video chip disabled, but some remnant of it
being there on the motherboard is often detected
by a distribution's installation script at some point.

The video card I have installed in a PCI slot is an
Nvidia geForce FX5200. It is detected sometimes
and sometimes not by a disto's installation.

I'm wondering if there's something I can do to
solve this problem. As it is I've noticed that
any Slackware based distro just goes blank at
some point during install, and I can't even use
the keyboard so I have to unplug the machine
just to power it down!

The Mandriva based PCLinuxOS detects both
the Intel for some reason and the Nvidia. But
at least it has a provision for correcting the
situation by logging into root and typing "video"
and a nice little utility comes up which allows
configuration of the graphics section of xorg.conf.

Is there something I can do?

This is a Gateway 2000 with a few upgrades
besides the Nvidia card, including 512Mb of
RAM.

Help would be appreciated.

You might just want to plug into the i810 card (the mobo) for install, then setup the nvidia card post initial install. Just diable the i810 in the xorg.conf file.

That might be the easiest way to get it done.
