NIS password problem

I have a NIS server on RHEL4 32-bit that has been running for a while. I have been given the assignment to upgrade to a 64 bit server which I have built on a new box. I have setup NIS on the new 64-bit server successfully. My problem is that I have copied the passwd, group, and shadow files and all of the home directories from the original to the new server. NIS sees the users if I run a ypwhich "username -password", but I cannot login or even su to any of the users. If I create a new user then there is no problem using that new user to login.

Any ideas?
