What does log says? Do you see anything strange in the logs (both client and server) at the time of mounting the share. Do you see anything in the logs for the time when umount occurs? RHEL 3.0 AS is quite old, what is the version of NFS running on the server?
as you are mounting shared folders on RHEL 3, that would be an older out dated vs of NFS (not to mention that RHEL 3 is well beyond support life cycle now even with extended support) and RHEL 5.x using both NFS v3 and v4. post your exports from RHEL3 as well as exactly how you are trying to mount those shares on the RHEL5.x system plus your logs.
We mounting RHEL3 mount folder to RHEL5.X not from RHEl5 to RHEL 3.

You did not mention which version of NFS is running on client and server. Run nfsstat -s and that you will give you that information. Not sure if that works on RHEL 3.0 AS machine but my wild guess is, it should work. Also, did you try using autofs on the client side instead of using /etc/fstab as that will provide client with on demand mount.
I wrote an article about how to ask questions on a forum, and some of the ettiquite involved. You should have a peek at it, because using ASAP is considered useless at a volunteer site. http://boardstretcher.github.io/blog...ask-questions/
The problem you are having is due to using unsupported software. RHEL 3.0 ended support at the beginning of this year. You are more than likely having an NFS problem, since 1.0.5 is from 2003, and 1.0.9 was released in 2012. You'll need to either upgrade one or downgrade one.
