First of all i have a 800Mhzz AMD Athalon (T-bird), 128 SDram with and ASUS A7V Motherboard and and ATI Rage Fury Maxx.
My problem is this: i can't get Xwindows, Gnome, KDE or any graphical windowed platform working. i can boot it up just fine in the screen with the big penguine with his arms up but when i type "startx" it says that: "server cuaght signal 11"
and that wit was dumping Cache or somthing. for those who arn't familiar with the Rage Fury MAxx card, it is two 128 Pro chips on 1 card.Mandrake has drivers for the rage 128 Pro cards but my card doesn't seem to work. i even disabled the second chip through windows and it still didn't work. i ran xf86config and went through that and set it up and it STILL didn't work. i am really stuck becasue alll i can do is browse around in the console after i log in as root.
PLEASE Help!!!

(BTW it also always says switching to runlevel 3 every time i boot up into console and i have the latest XFree86)

X windows

If you ran 'xf86config' and it did not work.. you might want to try some different settings. Try declaring less memory and maybe using 800x600 or something. Tone down the settings and use the lowest refresh rate on the monitor.
Try different things to see if you can get X working and keep notes as to any error messages you receive. Once you get it working.. you can tweak the settings back up.

What version of X are you using? Also what driver? More info about ATI and X is available here - http://www.xfree86.org/4.0.2/Status6.html

well try reconfiguring X with minimal settings
when you run X use 'startx -- :1' (in the midde there is two dashes I just realized you cannot see that when it is posted) to start it on the first virtural X server.

Don't work then I think that you have a driver problem or X some how got really messed up(not likely).

If you can't get anything to work pray a Linux wizard comes by and make it all better.

Nope, it stilll deson't work. i have heard you can get it to work by editing Xfree86 for 2 device sections but that is way over my head.
