Is that an older computer? I see you mention Windows 2000 so that doesn't seem an absurd question. The thing is that Ubuntu may not have the hardware requirements of a Vista but it does need more than an eight year old Windows OS. If you have less than 256MB of RAM, it is very likely that you'll have issues installing - and if you do get through, you'll end up with a system that runs far too slow (unless you replace the default Gnome with a lighter desktop such as XFCE).
As suggested, you can attempt a text install but that will still leave you with Gnome. The better option - again, if the problem is simply a computer that doesn't have enough RAM - is to download Xubuntu instead, which comes with XFCE as a default. However, Xubuntu looks and feels quite different from the Gnome that is described in the Ubuntu Bible. If that is a problem, you should consider putting in some extra RAM.
By the way, how does the disc work if you use it as livecd?
