1. VPN does not enhance performance or reduce network latency. Every VPN adds some lag.
1.a. A vpn service provides improved security, while increasing network latency depending upon the VPN server load and the internet route distance and number of nodes between the THREE endpoints involved. (Source, VPN server, Target)
1.b. A private VPN simplifies the networking, adds security, and impacts network latency less, dependent only upon load and the internet route distance and number of nodes between the TWO endpoints involved.

What kind of VPN are you currently using? Why?

2. For games over network, optimal is to be on the same physical network. Not because of addressing (which a VPN can help with) but because of the hardware layer. That 100 bt (or 1000 bt) wire/NIC path is optimal. If you go through your ISP to the internet, that link (at both ends) is more likely to be your network bottleneck.

My network is 100BT with 56BT wifi. My ISP link is about 3BT, recently improved from 1.5BT. This is typical for my area.

Find a place or player that can host a LAN party if you want to see local network performance games. It rocks!
