Hi, i just installed Mandrake Linux 9.1 running the gnome GUI and i want to know what the necessities are for it, i.e. themes, skins, applications, system monitors, etc. if someone could please write down a list of things that i have to download that would be well appreciated. Also, ive seen screenshots of other peoples desktops, and they have translucency effects and what not, could someone please tell me how to do this. Thanks.
There really isn't any necessities per se. Its really what you want to customize your own system. What gnome has can be suitable for most by default. You should look at our "Post a link to your Screenshot" thread in this same forum, it has many discussions of what others are using on their desktops, etc.
mplayer, gimp, gkrellm, Firebird/Thunderbird, gaim are the most important things to download. And I suggest you to try XFCE which is a desktop environment like GNOME.
