My keyboard won't function when I reboot........

I am running Mandrake 9.2 on my slave drive. I have to keep reinstalling because the keyboard functions stop working. When I install the system everything works fine, but when I shut the system down and attempt to log back on the keyboard won't echo. Can anyone tell me why this keeps happening?
