Mounting folder as CDROM?

Is there anyway to trick the system into treating a folder like the CDROM drive?

eg-make it so that when use a file that usually looks for files on the CDROM, it looks at a folder instead.

Someone proposed this on another forum:

Haven't tried it, but put the file in /mnt and then have /dev/cdrom point to /mnt. Might work, might not.

There is still a problem though: how do I get it to point to /mnt? If it is a lot of files would having it point to a folder within /mnt achive the same effect?

For the record, I am asking this because installing UT directly from the CD is not working because I am using the version packaged with SoundBlaster Live!.

Thanks

linux already does look at a folder to browse files on a cdrom..

in linux, it usually is something like /mnt/cdrom to view your cdrom drive to browse the files...

you have to have a directory to view the files when mounting a cdrom..

please clarify if your wanting to do something else.

You sort of answered the question backwards. I am not trying to work with a cdrom as if it was a folder, I am trying to get an app to look in a folder for files when always defaults to looking in your CDROM.

Symbolic links ???

is it safe to "assume" that you would like a program to stop searching the CDROM and have it point to a specific directory?

I am trying to install UT, but it does not work when I run it from the CDROM, ergo, I am trying to install it from the HD, but it automatically installs from the CDROM.

presumably there's a config file for UT somewhere, under linux i guess it's just automatically config'ed to head for /mnt/cdrom. doubt there's more than that.. might be hto i guess

You can pass a command option to the UT installer telling it to look somewhere else for the files as well as one to specify the location of your cdrom if the installer can't find it....unfortunatly I can't recall what the commands are but you should be able to google for them.

Thanks, I found the command and it allowed me to do what I wanted to do, but unfortunately it did not fix my ultimate problem. (segmentation error)

Now that I have done $export SETUP_CDROM=/(whatever) how do I set it back to nothing agian?
