Have Linux-Mandrake 7.2 Complete installed.Currently booting from floppy.I cannot access Floppy or either CDRom drives-always get "you don't have access rights" message. Remove the icons from the desktop-tried adding Floppy again-still no luck. I am the only user for this system. How do I unlock the /mnt/floppy & Cdrom folders? Have read and tried various things without success.Thank's- Dave

It appears that as a user you do not have rights to access the selected drives. You should be able to log in as root (can you remember your root password?), and access the drives through that account. If you want a more permenant method then edit the file /etc/fstab and make sure that the lines containing /dev/fd0 and /dev/cdrom have users as the option at the end.

Started over again- twice! Was able to use LinuxConfig to make changes- checked /etc/fstab- changes were made.Still in /mnt- the cdrom & floppy folders have locks on them. When I try to place icons on the desktop >file>new cdrom, new floppy-once I try to use them I keep getting access denied messages regarding the /mnt/floppy & /mnt/cdrom folders. The system is set up only as root now.I even used Chmod -rwxrwxrwx for each > did a ls -l each item shows the permissions- also showed up in fstab. The damn /mnt/floppy & /mnt/cdrom folders are still locked.I thought that setting the system up as root only would help-didn't change anything.Read thru Sam's Linux Mandrake in 24 hours.Obviously I'm still missing something.Am going to start from scratch again.Usually install to "existing partition" which I just formatted again with Partition Commander. With this Linux-Mandrake 7.2 Complete-does installing using expert mode give you different options during install regarding cdroms & floppy drives? What am I missing here? Been screwing with Linux for over a week now between trying get it to cooperate with System Commander and now with the "access denied" regarding the /mnt/floppy & /mnt/cdrom folders.By the way Mandrake has been no help! Dazed,Confused & Aggravated! Dave

is this on a FAT partition?

Are you installing this on a FAT or FAT32 partition instead of on a Linux native? There are definitely issues with Linux and how it manages rights on FAT partitions.

There are work arounds to these problems.. but its highly recommended that you install to native Linux partitions.

Unhappy

Installing to a Linux Partition.
I can mount a cdrom thru a terminal window. Using KDE for desktop. When I check the folders in /mnt >the floppy & both cdroms have padlocks on them.So when I try to create a desktop icon (in root)-(fstab has the proper permissions)- I always get "you don't have access rights to /mnt/cdrom".This is the problem I'm trying to solve. For whatever reason I cannot remove those padlocks.I would like functional icons to operate from.Any tips on how to do this will be GREATLY appreciated-as usual I must be missing something-thank's- Dave
