Monitor Resolution Problem

Here is my problem,

I am running SuSE 9.1 on a laptop
Specs:
Processor - Pentium 4 2.8 GHz
Video - ATI Mobility Radeon 9000
Current Resolution - 1280x1024

The display on the laptop works fine...when I plug
a my monitor at work into the display it works fine
(ViewSonic Brand)...but when I plug my monitor at
home (Samsung SyncMaster 955df) into the laptop
my desktop scrolls in every direction (The screen is
larger than the actual monitor size).

How do I fix this problem...?
I've tried moding the XF86config file...using Yast to
change the display settings...nothing works!!!
I've made sure the virtual display is disabled.

Also, the laptop screen still works fine...and both work
fine running up through the startup display.

Here is my XF86config file generated by Yast:

Can someone help me out...?

Thanks.

"How do I fix this problem...?"

I would try to do it this way.:

First use your owners manual or Gogle to find the dimensions of the Samsung SyncMaster 955df in millimeters. Plug in the Samsung SyncMaster 955df. Log in as root. Save the XF86config file someplace handy. Then run sax2. Go to monitor and click on properties and then 'expert' tab to enter
'Check desktopGeometry' values as (X-xxx, Y-yyy). And also go to 'Colour
and Resolution' to change colour bit and resolution. Save and exit 'sax2'. Reboot system.

If only Samsung SyncMaster 955df now works, you might try merging your new and old XF86config files but that can be tricky.

This solution didn't seem to work...

I did end up changing the display values
but the monitor still didn't work.

When I'm looking in the Sax Geometry info
I see the following layout:

Resolution: 1280x1024
64 Khz : 60 Hz
108 MHz

Also, I noticed that there isn't a monitor
listed for my laptop...only the Samsung
external monitor...could this have anything
to do with it?

Got any more ideas...?

Thanks,

"I did end up changing the display values

Are the symptoms the same or different after you changed the display values?

"Also, I noticed that there isn't a monitor
listed for my laptop...only the Samsung
external monitor...could this have anything
to do with it?"

When sax2 doesn't have your monitor model then the expert tab is the way to enter the information by hand. Since the desktop is larger than your screen will accomodate I suggest that you try setting the resolution to 1024 x 768. What are the dimensions of your screen in mm?

The symptoms were exactly the same...

When I reduce the resolution all the way down
to 640x480 then it works for both...Obviously
it looks terrible but thats the only setting that
it works on.

The dimensions of my screen in mm is
Width: 352 mm
Height: 264

I really wish this frickin thing would just
work already...I've been at this for weeks.

Got any more ideas...?
