Modem Light RedHat 9.0

Just installed RH 9. I am using the Conextant modem and it works OK. To connect I added to my panel the "Modem Lights 2.2.0" and it makes the connection OK, however the lights don't light up and to disconect I have to go to a terminal and "/sbin/ifdown ppp0". Does anyone has an idea how to make them work without using an external modem?

Working Modem Lights

The modem lights version I have is 2.0.1 on a RedHat 8.0

To have the modem lights work, the correct lock file must be placed
under preferences. Right click on the modem lights graphics and select
prefences.
Click the Advanced Tab. Now, to know what 'LCK' file is name is being
used, you must run a terminal.

For example:
Code:
$  ls /var/lock
LCK..ttyLT0
So, include this file name and directory in the 'Modem Lock File' field.
Code:
/var/lock/LCK..ttyLT0
Depending on what drivers are beings used will be different lock file name.
Hope this helps.

Question Mandrake 9.2 Modemlights

Hi,

I'm trying to configure modem-lights in MDK9.2 and when I enter

[root@localhost home]# ls /var/lock

I get

LCK..modem LCK..ttyS2 LCK..ttyS3 subsys/

What is going on here? Which one do I use?

Tom

Here are some helpful commands

first, try this command when you are under the /var/lock
directory:

Code:
ls -lR | grep '>'
This searches for a symbolic link to a serial device.

Use this command as root when you know your modem is connecting
through the pppd daemon. To find out when it connects, use
the following command as root:

Code:
tail -f /var/log/messages
Run this command as a seperate terminal. Look for a line
that says 'pppd device <-> /dev/???' which tells you
what the modem device is using when it is dialing.

As for which lock file to use, it is the modem that the
symbolic link points to and the pppd daemon uses is
the correct lock file to use.

Quote:
LCK..modem
LCK..ttyS2
LCK..ttyS3
subsys/
This would mean that the modem (or 3 modems) are being used.
The setting for which device to use is in the setup of when
you first create an ISP account through Linux. From what
I remember, it is under 'Network Configuration.'

Let me know if these commands help.

Thumbs up

Hi kuyalfinator,

Tried your command line instructions

tail -f /var/log/messages

Nov 6 18:03:01 hotkey pppd[2381]: Connect: ppp0 <--> /dev/tts/0

Tried applying this to the Modem Lights preferences

but the only one that makes the applet perform seems to be

/var/lock/LCK..modem

But I'm not too bothered as I've managed to get KPPP installed (it didn't seem to be installed with MDK9.2 main installation) and the modem lights are working,

Thanks for your advice though, much appreciated!

Tom
