Microsoft Event Viewer

Hello all, I now find myself in the unique situation of administering Linux boxes. I have always loved Linux, but never had a chance to work with it in a production environment. We have some servers that freeze up, or don't reboot when given the "shutdown -r now" command.

In MS I know I can look at the event log and see what's in there. What is similar to that in Linux so that I can see what services have crashed, or why the system didn't or doesn't reboot? Is that info. just in /var/log/messages?

-Thanks in Advance

it's not just that, dmesg is very useful too, although largely similar. you should be familiar with all files under /var/log/ really

Try looking at the log files stored in /var/log, especially messages and syslog. You should be able to find the problem in those files.

Good Luck!
Tim
